How to Set Up a Rat Cage, Step by Step

From bare base to running cage in six steps, then the 2-3 day cleaning clock that keeps ammonia off the rats' lungs.

Set up in six steps, in this order: base bedding, litter pan, hides, water bottle, wheel, cleaning clock. The order is practical — bedding stabilises the pan, the pan's corner fixes the traffic routes, and the bottle and wheel go last into the space that remains.

Steps one and two: cover the whole base in an even layer of paper-based bedding, then set the litter pan in one corner — the corner the rats already use, if the cage has been run before. Steps three and four: one hide per rat plus one spare, so nobody guards the only shelter, and the bottle low enough that a rat drinks standing on the floor with its head level.

Step five: mount the 28 cm solid wheel so it cannot rock, with clear space around it. Step six is not an object but a schedule: spot-clean every 2-3 days, full bedding change weekly. Place the finished cage in a room that holds 18-26 °C (65-80 °F); above about 30 °C a rat cannot cool itself, because rats do not sweat.

The failures this order prevents are specific: a thin bedding layer smells of ammonia within two days; a pan under the food bowl gets ignored; a single hide leaves a rat sleeping exposed; a bottle at shelf height leaves the smallest rat thirsty; a wire or undersized wheel costs feet and posture. Ammonia is the recurring problem — it provokes respiratory flare-ups, which is why the 2-3 day cycle is not optional.

Keep the health baseline in view while cleaning: resting breathing runs 70-115 breaths per minute and heart rate 250-500 beats per minute, so a rat breathing slowly at rest needs a vet within 24-48 hours. Dimensions for everything mentioned here are in the Rat Cage Size and Bar Spacing Guide; the daily ration is in the Rat Diet and Daily Feeding Chart.

  • 1. Lay base bedding across the whole floor
  • 2. Set the litter pan in the used corner
  • 3. Add one hide per rat, plus one spare
  • 4. Hang the bottle at floor-standing drinking height
  • 5. Mount the 28 cm solid wheel so it cannot rock
  • 6. Start the clock: spot-clean every 2-3 days, full change weekly
